PET scan

Hi there! Blake had a PET scan this morning. We're able to pull the results on-line & read the report by about 11:30. We expected that the scans would eventually start showing the tumor and lymph node involvement but this was more then expected. Let me just say the word several was used. Yuck.

PET scans show the metabolic uptake of tumors (standard uptake value.) The higher the SUV, the more active (or hot) the cancer is. The SUV values of the tumors were not as high as we've seen them before so that's good.

Blake asked me to send the PET scan results to Dr. Lowy's office. If Dr. Lowy still thought Blake was a candidate for HIPEC, he wanted me to get it scheduled. I heard back from Dr. Lowy's office within 15 minutes saying that he remains willing to proceed as long as Blake's Medical Oncologist is on board. We see Dr. Whisenant on Thursday so we'll confirm.

A dear friend made contact with me a few weeks ago. We had lost contact over the years but, facebook reconnected us! She had read this blog and was sad to see what Blake had been going through. It just so happens that she has her own medical writing business and has been willing to help with the insurance appeal! How does the saying go? People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime? I know the reason we've reconnected.... I think it was the sign I was looking for!!! Having her help is priceless.... And, she feels we have a really good shot at winning this appeal! **Thank you very much, LP!**

For what it's worth, if any of you ever have trouble with your insurance company, be ready to challenge them and stand toe-to-toe. I requested the information they used in making their decision to deny the HIPEC procedure. When I received the information, you wouldn't believe the mistakes I found! I'm talking serious and substantial mistakes! Proof positive that you have to be your own advocate - always.

Well, that's it for now. Blake has an appt with Dr. Whisenant on Thursday so I'll probably post an update Thursday night.

Until then.... ttfn!! (ca-mon.... you know what that means, right?)

Thanks for caring, Kathy
